Our Minister

A Short History of Your New Minister
familyHeather was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, the oldest of four children, and attended Wesley Memorial United Church for her growing up years, where she met her husband-to-be, Ross Dickson, in the nursery at church. Heather and Ross were both active youth in the church until they headed off to Dalhousie University, where they both earned Bachelor's Degrees in Science, and Heather earned a B.Ed. While she was in Halifax, she studied voice with Karen Kierstead Mills, and always sang her year's end recitals in the sanctuary at Fairview United Church, her first connection with Fairview.
Ross went off to do graduate work at Queen's University in Kingston, ON, and Heather followed him there after their marriage in 1987. While there, she experienced a call to ministry, and entered theological college at Queen's, graduating in 1996, which was also the year their first daughter, Shannon, was born. In fact, Heather's water broke on the last day of classes for her M.Div., a good case of timing if there ever was one. After stops in Calgary and Waterloo, ON, in December 1997 Heather was ordained, by Maritime Conference, she took up ministry in a two-point rural pastoral charge in Enterprise and Roblin, ON, about forty-five minutes from Kingston, where she stayed in ministry for nine and a half years. Daughter Alison came along in 1998 and son Matthew in 2002.
This past spring, Ross was offered a job on staff in the Computing Services department at Dalhousie, which he accepted, and the whole family moved back east in June of this year. We are settling in bit-by-bit, making connections, and enjoys being closer to family.
Heather enjoys music, sewing, smocking, quilting, baking gourmet desserts, losing herself in a good book, especially science fiction or fantasy -- we all enjoyed the release of the last Harry Potter book this summer -- and studying medieval history, an age she has loved since she first read about the adventures of Robin Hood in grade school. She is very interested in deeper study of the Bible, experiencing God's presence in a spiritual, relational way, and in exploring the future of the church as we move into the 21st century.
She is looking forward to meeting all of you over the next nine months, and hearing about what interests you.
